Polaris Enterprise Information Portal
Project
Alcatel is a telecommunication/networking world leader. With a worldwide
enterprise staff of greater than 100,000, Alcatel has found it difficult
to consolidate all of the aspects of their e-business initiatives
and strategies. The POLARIS B2B Portal is the amalgamation of several
key web-enabled initiatives: eSales, eMarketing, eSupply, and employee
self serve (ESS).
BAU Solutions has led the GLOBAL POLARIS initiative.
The portal is designed to affect the “sell side” of
business activities, which include marketing, sales, support and
fulfillment functions of constituents such as prospect influencers,
customers and partners in the carrier and enterprise markets. The
goal of Polaris is to have ALL of Alcatel’s URLs resolve to
a single infrastructure that is scalable, secure, robust, and fully
functional. Polaris Portal is Alcatel's single datasource. It
will also act as a single navigational framework through which an
administrator can customize the user experience based upon the needs
of the target audience. This system will bring Alcatel’s entire
Internet and Extranet core subject matter into one content management
repository and will allow easy communication via the web, PDA and
email push. The ongoing content creation will still reside within
the independent global departments but one central publishing authority
will manage it. The system can profile users with a single
sign-on ensuring the security of sensitive information housed within
the portal. Polaris is a flexible, scalable, and customizable standard
platform for future applications and integration of acquired legacy
applications.
BAU was asked to implement the ATG Dynamo Application
Server v 3.5 in the spring of 2000 and begin the system development
of intranet HR applications. In the winter of 2001, BAU was asked
to roll the system over to Dynamo 5.1 and integrate the ATG Personalization
Server and begin developing the business logic to pull ERP’s,
CRM's and multiple data-warehouses through the interface. With
the pilot complete, the BAU team has launched the integration of
middle tier applications to handle single sign-on, security,
content management and globalization. The design and development
is a J2EE initiative using Java Beans and JSP’s atop an Oracle
8i Database engine.
